Online Pilates Classes
Check out Lesley's:
After years of teaching regular mat classes around Los Angeles and traveling to teach workshops, Lesley wanted to create a way for more students to enjoy more Pilates.
By creating online Mat and Reformer Pilates classes Lesley was able to help clients get their Pilates fix without fighting traffic or getting on a plane. And, sticking with Joseph Pilates’s desire for people to do their Mat and Reformer work regularly, she made them only 30 minutes long.
So no matter how busy you are, you can take a half-hour for your flow.
What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months?
I recently purchased a milk frother for my morning coffee. I absolutely love my morning ritual which includes my coffee. This milk foamer allows me to make my morning lattes as if I had gone to the coffee shop. I absolutely love this and it is an item I purchased that up-leveled my morning routine.
How did you first get into pilates or yoga?
I first got into Pilates because I went to a class with a girlfriend of mine. I was looking for something new to do with a friend and we went to a pilates class. I absolutely from the minute we started class was hooked. I have been an athlete my entire life and know how to move my body. Pilates instantly made me aware of "how" I was moving my body. I felt parts of my body working that I had never felt. After that initial class, I changed my entire, work and life schedule around when I could take pilates - I became a little obsessed because I knew I was feeding my body a whole new language and I loved it.
In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life?
I changed my nighttime/bedtime ritual. I have a new regime in place- I do not under any circumstances look at any type of screen, tv, phone, iPad, computer 2 hours prior to my bedtime. My bedroom does not have any screens. I turn on my sleeping music from another room, so when I enter my bedroom, it is for sleeping, I turn on the music before I get into the room so I do not have to fiddle with any kind of screen once I am in my room. This new practice took me a little bit of time to get used to-the effects have been immense as I almost immediately started sleeping better, my dreams changed, I felt more connected and aware during the day. I am really pleased I changed my nighttime ritual as it has had a huge impact on me in a positive manner.
What’s more important: the teacher or the mindset?
Mindset! The student has to have the proper mindset meaning, they have to want to learn/change. I could be the greatest coach, teacher, inspiration in the world, if the mental commitment is not there, nothing is going to change. Being teachable is the key to learning anything new or improving. We can always keep achieving, but this is all about your mindset.
Do you like classical or contemporary pilates/yoga more? Why?
This is an interesting question and I find it a little bit polarizing. Meaning some people are so committed to doing a practice their way. I personally like classical pilates, because that is how I was trained and I am very familiar with that sequence, the language that goes with the classic training. However, I really want to stress, whatever works for you. I just want people to do pilates because I know it's so good for you and whatever way works for you is what you should do.
What advice would you give to people wanting to start pilates or yoga?
Start before you think you're ready. You just need to show up and the practice is going to meet you where you are. Pilates is not just for women, or women with money it literally is for everybody- if you are an athlete, stay-at-home mom, or dad, doctor, dentist, teacher, etc. Pilates is literally for you. I get to meet so many people from so many walks of life. You learn more about the meaning of life when you get to meet different people. I think this is amazing that anybody can come and do pilates and so you get to learn so much about yourself and others.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I want to be a tequila sommelier - with hard kombucha on tap. I'm going to have a bar and I will have both these things, I want everyone to get their probiotics.
Tell us about someone you admire and why you admire them?
Sheryl Sandberg, she has values and sticks to them she supports other mom that work and sets an example for that. She does it all without shaming others.
How would you describe pilates/yoga in 1 word?
Commitment
What's your favourite colour?
Purple
What one thing in life do you consider to be overrated?
I think it is overrated to be following up on every hot tv show or every fitness modality, I think FOMO is overrated, whoever coined JOMO the JOY of Missing out is a genius.
What's something exciting you're currently working on/learning that only a few people know about?
Breathwork, I am currently learning different breathing techniques. I do not like to teach anything until I have mastered it. I know from the small amount of work I have been doing on breath work what an enormous difference this makes in how you carry yourself, how you feed your organs, and your tissue. I am currently looking for a breathwork teacher that is right for me and I will soon be incorporating this into my teaching.
What's your star sign?
Aquarius
What did you have for breakfast this morning?
OK- generally I don't get to have this, but I was just in LA. So I was able to get my favorite Kreation loaf. Kreation makes a pumpkin cranberry loaf, gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, I toast it on a pan, I put a little almond butter, drizzle chocolate collagen and cut up a banana, its the most divine, You've got the sweet bread, protein from the collagen, fruit, everything is in there. Perfect healthy wholesome meal.
What is your favourite thing about the culture and community of your chosen practice?
Variety. I love that Pilates is for EveryBODY. I think that anybody can come and do pilates which allows you to learn about you and others. I think people often think they need a lot of equipment, once they discover they don't need tons of equipment to do pilates, it is a practice that is for you. Pilates especially mat pilates - You don't have to go to the gym, find parking, - that's a lot for people to commit to. If you just do mat pilates, the mat will meet you where you are. You can do it in so many different ways, you can do self-taught, you can be led. more people will do pilates and it will change the outlook of people on the planet when they practice pilates.
